What all those pins are for in an HDMI cable.
What's inside an HDMI cable? HDMI connectors have 19 pins. Pins 1-9 carry three data channels called (Transition Minimized Differential Signaling) or TMDS. This technology allows HDMI and DVI to send high speed digital data. This uses three pins per TMDS channel which carries the video and audio information, and there is a + and - for each plus the ground. Pins 10, 11 and 12 carry the clock channel for the TMDS which helps keep the signals in sync. The pins also consist of a +, a -, and a ground. Pin 13 is used for the Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) channel and is used to talk between two connected components. Pin 14 is not used. Pins 15 and 16 are used for whats called the Display Data Channel or DDC. It's used for communicating EDID (Extended Display Identification Channel) information between devices. Pin 17 is a data shield for the CEC and DDC channels. There is +5 volts that is carried on pin 18 and pin 19 is what's called the Hot Plug Detect which is dedicated to monitoring power up and down and unplug and plug status.
